Orthopedic Physiotherapy is a special branch of physiotherapy that is also known as musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Musculoskeletal means muscles and bones. Mainly it treated Muscles, ligaments, bursae, tendons, joints, and bones. Orthopedic physiotherapists may have all the patients from the age group of children to old age.

The goals or aim of the rehabilitation part is to assess about joint range of motion, muscle strength, pain and causes of pain, and mobility of a particular joint. Treatment plans vary according to the patient’s pain and specific needs, severity of the condition, and individual goals.

Conditions that are treated by orthopedic physiotherapists:

PAIN: Joint, muscles, ligaments, tendons. Any physical pain due to injury to the mentioned structure will be treated by rehabilitation.

POST-OPERATIVE CONDITIONS:  Any joint replacement, Spine surgery, amputation, ligament repair, etc.

MUSCLE SPRAINS AND STRAINS: injury to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons often caused by overuse or trauma.

SPORTS INJURIES: ligament sprain, stress fracture that results from sports or recreational activities.

POSTURAL PROBLEMS: Being in the same posture which is incorrect contributes to pain and dysfunction.

OVERUSE INJURIES: Conditions such as tendonitis, bursitis, and stress fracture.

Treatment approaches in orthopedic physiotherapy may include:

MODALITIES: Ultrasound, TENS, electrical stimulation, traction, heat/cold therapy

MANUAL THERAPY:  Soft tissue mobilization, joint manipulation, and mobilization to improve joint mobility,  reduce pain, and restore function.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING:  Exercises that improve functional movements relevant to the individual’s daily activities, and work.

EDUCATION AND SELF MANAGEMENT:  Education about maintaining posture, ergonomics advice, body mechanics, and injury prevention strategies.
